Gail Kaiser is a professor of computer science and the director of the Programming Systems Laboratory at Columbia University. Her research interests include social software engineering, privacy and security, software reliability, self-managing systems, parallel and distributed systems, Web technologies, information management, and software development environments and tools.

As a member of the Center for Multiscale Analysis of Genomic and Cellular Networks (MAGNet), Dr. Kaiser is collaborating with Aris Floratos and members of the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics to develop collaborative tools for geWorkbench, an online platform developed at MAGNet that enables researchers anywhere to access and utilize the computational tools and resources developed by the center. Kaiser is designing a capacity to pool community knowledge within geWorkbench using genSpace, an advanced activity logging framework developed in the Programming Systems Laboratory. By monitoring user activities within geWorkbench, the new platform will facilitate the development of “community memory,” facilitate dynamic, context-sensitive knowledge sharing, and offer users automatic recommendations for data analysis workflows.
